The Golden Rock Regatta Grows Up

In only three years, the Golden Rock Regatta -- island to island racing in the Caribbean -- has grown from eight boats to 20.

The event emphasizes the historical and cultural uniqueness of the islands to stimulate the growth of tourism and, in turn, the local economies. This year, the Golden Rock Regatta also chose four schoolchildren from Statia to ride alongside the racing boats to learn about sailing and the islands.

Racing kicked off on November 11 from Sint Maarten, commemorating the recognition of U.S. independence by the Netherlands in 1776. Racing wrapped up this week at Fort Orange, Statia, with first-place honors going to Christopher Land of New York and a sailing team sponsored by DLA Piper.

The schedule of events:

Monday November 12: The St. Barths Pursuit Race

Tuesday November 13: The St. Barths to Statia Race

Wednesday November 14: The St. Kitts Pursuit Race

Thursday November 15: The St. Kitts to Statia Race

Friday November 16: The Statia Day Pursuit Race
