Garmin recalls new charts

Barely a month after announcing the latest generation of its BlueChart cartography, Garmin has announced a worldwide recall of all these new chart cards. Errors in the depth data on the cards may have been at least partly to blame for two boats running aground in Sweden and Denmark.

So far the problem appears to be confined to Scandinavian waters, but after looking at the production process for the cards Garmin says they can’t be certain that other geographic areas are not similarly affected.

That’s why Garmin is announcing that all customers who have bought BlueChart g2 and BlueChart g2 Vision chart cards since April 2009 should not use them and should contact Garmin or their local Garmin dealer for a replacement.

As soon as corrected BlueChart g2 and BlueChart g2 Vision cards are available, Garmin will issue them free of charge to all customers who have bought the new cards. But Garmin says that these new cards might not be available until the end of the year. In the meantime Garmin is issuing last year’s cards (dated July 2008) as temporary replacements.
