Boston Library VOR Lecture

Boston Library VOR Lecture

Interested in an inside look at the Volvo Ocean Race? Get a perspective on this 37,000 nautical mile adventure from two of the world’s premiere sailing writers – for free — on Tuesday, May 12 at 1830 in the Boston Public Library’s Rabb Lecture Hall (Johnson Building). SAIL Magazine’s editor-at-large Kimball Livingston and senior editor David Schmidt will discuss the challenges and triumphs that make the Volvo Ocean Race a unique adventure. The event is sponsored by The Lowell Institute.

Livingston has sailed to many of the world’s most exotic locations, penned scripts for Francis Ford Coppola, has written two books about sailing, and reported on the America’s Cup since the days when it was still carefully guarded by the NYYC. He recently competed in The Centennial Los Angeles-Honolulu, Centennial Newport-Bermuda, and 100th running of Chicago-Mackinac. He’s also been spotted sailing 29ers on San Francisco Bay and enjoys the occasional sailing foray to Mexico or an afternoon on megayachts, such as the Maltese Falcon.

Schmidt has been on boats since before he was born. In 2007, he began covering the Puma Racing Team as they trained for the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race. As a senior editor, Schmidt has sailed on anything from 20-footers to race-wining, 100-foot ocean sleds.

The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited, so please RSVP with leslie@bplf.com. A reception will follow in the Abbey Room of the McKim Building. The Lowell Institute frequently sponsors public lecture, exhibits and events for the citizens of Massachusetts.
