An anchor isn’t just for passing the day or night away from the marina. It is a key piece of safety gear–something to keep you in one place when the engine fails or a contrary wind threatens to throw your boat on the rocks. This course is designed to teach how to anchor like a professional mariner whether conditions are benign or threatening.
Anchor Designs and Techniques
Each of the various anchor designs will be explained to convey how they work and which works best in different bottoms. Students will learn how to choose the right size anchor and how to create an entire system around it. The concept of “scope” will be explained because deploying the correct ratio of line and chain (collectively “the rode”) for the depth of the water is absolutely key to successful anchoring. Other topics include anchoring techniques, using multiple anchors simultaneously, windlasses, anchoring catamarans and useful tips from the pros. By the end of the course, a student will have a thorough understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of anchors and anchoring.
