If there was ever any doubt as to the speed potential for the eye-popping Ultime maxi-trimaran class, the first 24 hours of the Brest Atlantiques race have surely put such doubts to rest. The drone footage above of Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier’s Gitana Edmond de Rothschild at speed is truly a study in power and unparalleled design. Note in particular, how it is not just the windward ama, but the leeward ama as well that is often out of the water and the boat’s lifting foils counteract the boat’s heeling moment, as generated by its towering rig. Incredible, all the more so because there are just two sailors aboard keeping it all together.
