With one of yacht racing’s most extreme events kicking off this weekend, masses have already begun to gather in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, to witness the spectacle of the Vendée Globe. On Sunday, 40 racers will set out to sail solo, nonstop, and unassisted around the world. This year, six of those competitors will be women.

The Magenta Project—an advocacy and mentorship program born from the 2014/15 all-female Volvo Ocean Race team SCA—has premiered a documentary that showcases the pathways that Sam Davies, Pip Hare, and Maria Lobato followed in their bids to sail around the world. The film celebrates the achievements of women sailing in the IMOCA class and lays out some of the challenges that they have faced along the way.

By onboard reporters Lauren Darby Zike and Flore Hartout and SAIL’s own Managing Editor Lydia Mullan, the film was made in conjunction with The IMOCA class and 11th Hour Racing.
