On July 8, 1976, Dame Ellen MacArthur was born. A sailor since childhood, this English yachtswoman is best known for her 2005 world record for the fastest solo nonstop voyage around the world, completed in 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds. She also won the 1995 Young Sailor of the Year Award after sailing solo around Great Britain and scored a second-place finish in the 2000-2001 Vendée Globe. Since her retirement from competitive sailing in 2009, she has been working for a more sustainable future, promoting a circular economy aimed at reinventing the way we think about consumption and economic production.
