Sailors at all levels consider the ocean their home-away-from-home and are concerned for its well being, so it comes as no surprise that the pros are eager to do their part to help. Sailors for the next Vendee Globe have committed to carrying and deploying research buoys for UNESCO. Data will be collected to aid preservation efforts, particularly in the southern ocean. Because these sailors see waters that are difficult to get to and usually deserted, it offers researchers an opportunity to collect data in locations that would otherwise be inaccessible.
