Stronger than Steel
When it comes to high-modulus rope, the fibers themselves are only part of the equation. Just as important, if you’re in search of the ultimate in performance, is the way those fibers are assembled. To make its STS rope “stronger than steel” while minimizing elongation and maximizing the rope’s service life, New England Ropes is now using what it calls “heat-set” technology, wherein it heats the rope to over 212°F under tension. This reportedly causes the molecular chains that make up the fiber to orientate themselves in the same direction as the direction of imposed loads. The result? A lightweight, durable rope of small diameter that doesn’t lose or gain tensile strength or elongate as much over time. You can’t go wrong with that!
