Vincere Takes Home the 2011 Canada’s Cup

The fourth and final day of the 2011 Canada’s Cup regatta this past weekend proved to be a disappointing one for Americans. The competition, which took place on Lake Michigan for only the second time in the cup’s 115-year history, ended with Vincere of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club of Toronto defeating Heritage of the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club of Holland, Michigan, five to three.

The Transatlantic Tradition Continues

A new monohull record, a giant-killing performance by a cruising catamaran and a straight-out-of-the-box victory for the new Puma Volvo 70: those were some of the high points of last summer’s dramatic Transatlantic Race 2011.George David’s super-maxi Rambler 100 blasted across the 2,975-mile course from Newport, Rhode Island to Lizard Point off Cornwall, England, in just over 6 days, 22

Celestial to Bermuda

Back when the Marion-Bermuda cruising yacht race was founded in 1977, everybody was required to use celestial navigation. The race formally sanctioned electronic navigation in 1997, but many boats still choose to navigate using the sun, moon and stars.During this year’s race, eight entries in the 50-boat fleet navigated celestially, including my father’s boat, the Hinkley Sou’Wester 50

Volvo Ocean Race Rerouted Due to Piracy

The threat of piracy in the Indian Ocean has forced organizers of the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race to reroute racing for the second and third legs. Acting on the advice of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and other marine safety experts, organizers are opting to have the boats race from Cape Town to a “safe haven port,” and then ship the boats to Abu Dhabi to resume racing. This

Panerai Corinthian Classic Celebrates Vintage Yachts

***Check out even more photos in our Panerai Corinthian Classic Photo Gallery***When Ted Hood steps away from a two-year racing hiatus to take part in a regatta aboard his own boat, Sea Robin, you know the boats must be pretty sweet. And I’m not talking America’s Cup-style sweet, though you can

Rambler 100 Capsizes

All 21 crew are safe, according to the Irish Coast Guard. The incident happened just after Rambler 100 rounded the Fastnet Rock at 1725 local time. Ensign

On August 14-18 the Canandaigua Yacht Club in upstate New York will be hosting a truly special regatta, the 50th National Ensign Championship. Around 45 boats are expected to attend; not bad for a full-keel racer-daysailer in this age of carbon fiber and bowsprits. Gary Jobson, president of US Sailing, will be a keynote speaker at the event.Designed by Carl Alberg, the Ensign was inducted

The (Long) Point Is—

Why let a sailboat race stand in the way of a party? This question has been asked many times, sometimes seriously, other times at an exaggerated angle of heel. But I assure you that the question has never been answered more boldly than at Long Point Race Week, which is hosted by the Balboa and Newport Harbor yacht clubs. For three days in August (26-28th) many of the best sailors in Southern

AC45s Take on Cascais

The opening two days of the first-ever World Series racing in the 34th America’s Cup gave spectators in Cascais, Portugal, plenty of brilliant views of the lightning-quick AC45s. Here, SAIL brings the racing (and some of the shots) to you. The weekend offered racing at both ends of the spectrum: Saturday dawned grim and cloudy, with conditions that normally would

Tragedy and Triumph in the Chicago Mac Page 3

A capsize in the 103rd Chicago Mackinac Race that took the lives of Mark Morley and Suzanne Bickel highlighted the dangers inherent in offshore racing and brought out the best in the competitors who responded to the accident.Ironically, in this era of EPIRBs and other technological “miracles,” it was a simple whistle—required equipment for all Mackinac racers—and a half dozen rescue lights

A Truly Awesome Dinghy

In 1980, I owned a 26ft fiberglass ketch named Recycle, a full-keeled vessel with a 10 hp Honda outboard in a well behind the tiller.

The Case for Small Boats

Though they don’t reel off the miles like a performance-cruiser, I would argue that some of the purest, best sailing can be found aboard small
