Daniela Moroz and Harry Melges IV received U.S. Sailing’s highest competitive racing honor for their respective 2021 seasons, demonstrating excellence on the water and representing the US on the national stage. Moroz, who is just 21, has already received the honor twice, while Melges is a first-time recipient.
“It’s such an honor to win this award for the third time,” said Moroz, who competes in the Formula Kite class. “All year I was just focused on being the best sailor I could be, so this is a pleasant surprise.” Moroz’s impressive season consisted of a win in the Women’s Formula Kite Worlds and the Formula Kite European Championships as well as being the top female competitor at both the San Francisco and Clearwater US Open Sailing Series.
Likewise, Melges’ 2021 season was marked with excellence, including winning two E Scow National Championships (a feat made possible for the first time ever due to rescheduling of one championship from 2020 to 2021), the Melges 24 Gold Cup and the IC37 East Coast Championship. “Winning this award is such an honor to me since my grandfather won it 60 years ago,” said Melges. “I’ve worked hard this season and I am so glad to be able to take home this trophy.”
