American Sailing has announced the passing of CEO Jonathan Payne. Payne is remembered as a champion for the sport who worked tirelessly to support and grow the sailing community.

“Sailing lost an ally this week. At American Sailing, we lost a little bit of our soul,” said President Cindy Shabes. “Jonathan’s smile lit up our screens. His voice steadied us. His presence lifted us. While we mourn, we will continue to build upon the structure he put in place.”

SAIL technical editor and Sail America President Adam Cove remembers him for the positive energy he brought to Sail America’s board. “Jonathan was a valued member of our sailing industry and sailing community,” he says. “I’ve been fortunate to serve on the Sail America board with him and bear witness to his selfless dedication to the sport. His enthusiasm, creativity, and leadership will be missed but not forgotten—the waves he started will continue to positively impact all of us for years to come.”

He was described by those he worked with as a mentor, collaborator, and friend who led the organization with creativity and compassion. Under his leadership, American Sailing expanded their network of affiliate schools to the largest size in decades, currently totalling over 400 globally, and launched American Boating to bring educational resources to powerboaters as well as the sailors they have served for decades.

Regarding the direction of American Sailing, a statement from the organization shared that, “American Sailing remains committed to its mission and to the work Jonathan championed. The organization has implemented an interim leadership structure to ensure continuity during this transition, and will share additional updates in the coming weeks.”

Our hearts go out to his loved ones and community.
