Rhode Island-based US Watercraft Purchases C&C Yachts

US Watercraft, the Rhode Island-based boatbuilder—which also manufacturers Alerions and a variety of models for J/Boats—purchased C&C Yachts, and promptly unveiled the hot-looking Mark Mills-designed C&C 30: a flush-deck, reverse-sheer sportboat with a wicked-looking sprit and over 610 square feet of working sail.

Best Boat: Beneteau Oceanis 38

The latest in the company’s trend-setting and highly successful Oceanis line, the Oceanis 38 takes performance-cruiser customization to a whole new level by being available in three distinctly different configurations that can then be swapped out again years later if you so desire.

Eight Bells: Hobart “Hobie” Alter

Hobart “Hobie” Alter, the creator of both the Hobie catamaran line and an entire sailing subculture, passed away peacefully at his Palm Desert home on March 29.

Tested: Bavaria Vision 42

Not only is Bavaria Yachtbau one of the world’s largest boatbuilders, it has got to be one of the hardest working. When it came time to begin work on what would become its new Vision line, the company didn’t just sit around and brainstorm what it thought its customers would like. Instead it went out and spoke to the customers themselves—hundreds of them—to find out what they thought worked (and didn’t work) on a cruising boat.

Three New Performance Cruisers from Salona

The Croatia-built Salona range now has a new importer in the United States, who showed three boats at the Miami Strictly Sail show last month: a powerful-looking 44-foot sports cruiser, and a 38-footer and 33-footer along the same lines.

J/88

Although the new J/88 has very similar lines to the J/111 and J/70 that precede it, the boat still has a personality that is distinctly its own.  For example, whereas the J/111 is almost in “big boat” range with its 9,300lb displacement, 36ft 6in LOA and 663ft2 of sail area, the J/88 is refreshingly nimble with its 4,990lb displacement, 439ft2 of sail area and a LOA of just over 29ft.

A Quartet of New American Designs

Away from the docks at last October’s U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, the buzz was all about the just-announced Hinckley Bermuda 50. This is the first new sailing boat from Hinckley since 2004, when the venerable builder got in right at the forefront of the daysailer movement with its DS42.

Mexican Marina Crackdown, and the Ripple Effect

On November 29, 2013, more than 100 Mexican officials, accompanied by armed marines, swooped down on 12 marinas in Mexico to conduct surprise compliance checks on 1,647 boats. The newly created General Audit of Foreign Trade Administration wanted to confirm that every boat was following protocol by carrying a Temporary Importation Permit (TIP).

Boat Review: Lagoon 39

It looks like a Lagoon. It’s built like a Lagoon. But this 39-footer is a new breed of catamaran.
