We were maybe half a mile from the leeward mark, surging along relentlessly aboard the X-65 Karuba V, when the rig came down to the accompaniment of a collective gasp from the crew. The International Sailing Federation has ruled that four-time British Olympic medalist Ben Ainslie was guilty of “gross misconduct” when he assaulted the crew of a media boat during December’s ISAF World Sailing Championships in Perth, Australia.

This year’s series, which begins May 11, will also feature a second double-handed leg from Charleston, South Carolina, to New York Harbor, in addition to an offshore leg from New York to Newport, Rhode Island, and two days of inshore racing.
