Standard Horizon’s HX-300 handheld VHF offers a lot of radio in a small floating package, making it a good example of a product in which less is more. Although it is not overly complex and eschews several of the unnecessary and seldom-used bells and whistles found on some models, it is still plenty capable of hailing a nearby merchant ship or bridge operator on channel 13 or any other VHF station within range.

Compact and submersible to nearly 5 feet for 30 minutes, it’s just right for a foul-weather jacket pocket or ditch bag. At such a reasonable price there’s no reason not to have several onboard.
