Open 60 fans will get a rare chance to see the boats in action in the United States at the start of the double-handed New York-Barcelona Transoceanic Regatta, the first of three IMOCA Ocean Masters World Champtionship races set for this year. The three-race series will culminate in the Barcelona World Race, which begins December 31.

Fans will also have a chance to root for one of their own, as up-and-coming U.S. sailor Ryan Breymaier, a veteran of the 2010-11 Barcelona World Race, fills in aboard Hugo Boss for British sailor Alex Thomson, whose wife is expecting their second child midway through the crossing.

Scheduled to start from in front of the North Cove Marine in the heart of New York Harbor, the New York-Barcelona Race will consist of two distinct sections—3,700 miles across the Atlantic and then another 525 miles from the Straits of Gibraltar to the finish. At press time, five teams were expected to take part, including Breymaier’s former Neutrogena team, which he was a part of for the 2010-11 world race. For details, visit oceanmasters.com.
