This past week saw some challenging racing and a new course record in the Marblehead-Halifax. Join Managing Editor Lydia Mullan and three-time race winner Rob Bova for a look back on the start.
After a gorgeous first day, the fleet faced dense fog and chilly conditions for most of the rest of the race. For many, the fog only lifted as the wind went, and the final approach to the finish line was a “We were two hours out of Halifax for about eight hours,” recalls Lindsay Gimple, crew aboard Legacy V.

One boat that didn’t have trouble with boat speed was Temptation, a JV 66 owned by Oakcliff. With 19 sailors including legends Dawn Riley and Gary Jobson aboard, they took both line honors and a new course record with an elapsed time of 28 hours, 02 minutes and 56 seconds, besting the previous race record by 45 minutes.
