This weekend we’re looking back on the start of the inaugural Sunday Times Golden Globe, which began on June 1, 1968. There was no organized start. Instead, this marks the beginning of a starting window during which the sailors, including Bernard Moitessier, Robin Knox-Johnston and ill-fated Donald Crowhurst, were allowed to choose when to set out. Only one sailor, John Ridgway aboard English Rose IV, actually began his attempt on the first possible day.
