Forget about the speed, what about the noise? It was the pre-start of a 150-mile race from Newport, Rhode Island, to New York City, and I was one of four sailors manning the dual coffee grinders aboard the Multi One Design (MOD) 70 Race for Water.

The key is to see the blades of a turbine as a sail being tacked along a constrained course, or to recognize that a windmill generates energy that can be put to many uses.

The 33rd Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta took place over Labor Day weekend in Newport, Rhode Island. A favorite event in the community, sponsored by Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the regatta is limited to classic wooden yachts.

A Gathering of the Classes: There’s a new one-design kid in town—the Bayview One Design Regatta, which hosted more than 200 boats off Detroit, Michigan, on Lake St. Clair in early June.

It was the start of Leg 2 of the second annual Atlantic Cup, a mixed-format regatta raced in high-speed water-ballasted Class 40 sloops, and we were bound for Newport, Rhode Island.

Back in days gone by, before rumbling speedboats and thundering Spring Break coeds discovered Lake Havasu, this was a place for sailing. A wide spot on the Colorado River 448 feet above sea level (a product of the Parker Dam), Havasu was a desert haven with vistas of jagged peaks and winters infused with sunshine and warmth.

The Philadelphia Cup Regatta returns on September 29 on the Delaware River with a series of one design races between the Betsy Ross and the Walt Whitman bridges, two of the city’s most famous and picturesque bridges.
