You can expect to see more offshore scows following David Raison’s victory in last year’s Mini-Transat aboard a scow-bowed 21-footer. Among them, hopefully, will be this 90-foot Transpac “maxi scow,” currently in the works at Reichel-Pugh Yacht Design.

In addition to creating Transpac record-breakers such as Roy Disney’s Pyewacket, Reichel-Pugh also created the Melges 17 scow, making the firm uniquely qualified in this area. The 2,225-mile Transpac is typically over 90 percent reaching and running, making it almost perfect for this kind of planing hull, with its abundant buoyancy forward.
