Educational Passages: an Alternative Learning Experience Under Sail

Approximately halfway between Nova Scotia and Portugal, you may find an unmanned five-foot boat, trekking across the Atlantic Ocean with a GPS on board. That boat, Crimson Tide, belongs to a seventh grade geography class in Morristown, New Jersey where students are tracking its voyage via GPS, hopefully all the way to Europe.

Tall Ships Challenge 2013: Bicentennial Commemoration of the War of 1812

Since 2001, the Tall Ships Challenge, an annual series of races and public port festivals, has been rotating between the Pacific Coast, the Atlantic Coast and the Great Lakes, commemorating this historical and epic batle. This summer, the Challenge is taking place in the Great Lakes, giving the public an opportunity to experience the massive ships and their intricate rigging up close.

“Pirates” in Virginia Aim to Set a New World Record

Head to your nearest costume shop and stock up on pirate garb before September 21, when a group of vagrants, troubadours, and scallywags will endeavor to break a world record. The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia is aiming to host the largest-ever gathering of pirates, to be judged by a Guinness World Records official.

Bringing the Block Island Double-Ender Home

John Puckett, a graduate of the wooden boatbuilding and restoration program at the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) in Newport, RI, has set out to create a replica of a historical Block Island double-ender sailboat. He plans to restore the boat to historically accurate conditions with help from the Block Island Historical Society.

A New Regatta for Charity: Pursuit for Courage

The first Pursuit for Courage Regatta was held in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, on June 29 to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project. The Annual Cancer Regatta Pro-Am, a charitable summer race that ran from 1993-1999 in the Buzzards Bay area, inspired the new regatta.

The National Sailing Center and Hall of Fame has announced the 2013 class of inductees to the National Sailing Hall of Fame. The 10 inductees are being honored in recognition of their accomplishments in a variety of different areas within the sailing world.
