Apps for Sailors: Any.do

Managing a boat is largely a matter of maintaining lists of schedules, provisions and things to do. In the past, I’ve used a combination of task-management tools on my desktop, apps on my smartphone and old-fashioned sticky notes to keep things organized, but the Any.do app (for IOS, Android and with a Chrome browser extension) has become my go-to task manager.

Marinebeam’s New Ultra Long Range Flashlight

Illuminator flashlight has to be seen to be believed. I put my camera on a tripod and simply began lighting up a number of boats and mooring buoys about 500 to 700 yards away.

Cruising Solutions’ Bluetooth-powered Headsets

Sailboats can be remarkably noisy when it comes time to dock or anchor. The wind, the rumble of the auxiliary, the chatter of the windlass: all these things and more can make it surprisingly hard to hear what the person at the other end of even a smaller boat is saying.

Watt & Sea Hydrogenerators

Over the years, Watt&Sea hydrogenerators have steadily evolved to the point where they are no longer used exclusively by grand prix offshore racers, but are also found aboard a growing number of cruising boats.

Edson International’s Performance Pedestals

Edson International’s Performance Pedestals are lightweight and robust, and can be mounted at a number of different angles, including vertically, to suit a wide variety of single or dual helm configurations aboard everything from custom offshore racing boats to coastal cruisers.

Staying in Reach: DeLorme SE Satellite Messenger

I also tested the system shoreside by loaning a sample inReachSE model to friends Doug and Dale Bruce when they went on a cruise to some remote islands south of New Zealand.

In Search of Budget LED Nav Lights

As much as I value LED lighting, I was hesitant to change Gizmo’s navigation light fixtures. Why spend the (significant) money and refit time to save power when a big alternator is always running at the same time as the running lights anyway?

Torqeedo Torq Trac Smartphone App & Bluetooth Module

Recent model Torqeedo electric outboards have included nifty little screens showing things like how much power you have left and how much farther you can go before the next recharge. With the help of the company’s new Torq Trac smartphone app

Connected: Wi-Fi on Board

Is the water potable? How’s the holding? Where’s the nearest chandlery? These are no longer the first questions posed by cruisers arriving in a new port. Nowadays, our first questions revolve around a more crucial topic: the Internet!

Today’s Trivia: The Right Way

Though it’s perhaps the most well-known word in the nautical lexicon, many don’t know where the word “starboard” came from. What’s the etymological origin? A)

Happy Holidays from SAIL

It’s a cliche but 2025 really was a year like no other—for me, for the magazine, and for the world. At this time last year,
